The completion of a Civil Service
Exam is the very first step for all applicants seeking employment
at the Winter Park Police Department. Employment applications
will not be given out, nor will resumes be accepted, until the applicant
has completed and passed the Civil Service Exam.
Applicants must meet at
least one of the following requirements to be eligible
to take the Civil Service Exam:
- Be currently
employed as a law enforcement officer in the state of Florida
- Be currently employed as a law
enforcement officer in another state
- Have successfully completed
a law enforcement academy in the state of Florida
- Be currently attending a law
enforcement academy in the state of Florida

Winter Park Police Department hiring standards are strict
and employees are compensated accordingly.
- Starting Salary of $38,559.05
- Roll-call differential pay when assigned
to Uniform Patrol
- Annual base salary increase if merited
- Annual medical bonus pay plan based
upon the number of unused medical leave hours
- Longevity pay after 5 years
- Paid Overtime
- Minimum 2 hour call-out pay
- Incentive pay of a maximum $1,560.00
per year for College Degrees and approved career development
courses.
- Generous 20 yr Retirement Plan with
various officer-selected options including the ICMA
Deferred Compensation 457 Program and the "Drop
Plan"
- Special Detail Pay - $30.00 per hour

The
Winter Park Police Department offers an excellent benefit

The Winter Park Police
Department rewards it's employees with generous holiday
and vacation/leave to include:
- 8 1/2 Standard Holidays
- 1 Floating Holiday
- Personal Leave. 3 weeks first year.
Hours increase with each year of service. 5 weeks after
10 years.
- Long term sick leave up to 80 hours,
year; maximum of 1000 hours
- Bereavement time up to 5 working days
for immediate family members
- Quality leave, up to 4 hours for exceptional
performance.
- Paid military leave, not to exceed
17 days per calendar year

To
be considered for employment with the Winter Park Police
Department you must be:
- Be 19 Years of age
- Be A U.S. Citizen
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- Possess a valid Florida drivers license
- Meet vision requirements binocular
and monocular vision of 20/50 uncorrected & 20/30
corrected
- Have no problems with color vision
- Be of good moral character
- Pass a fingerprint check
- Have no felony or misdemeanor convictions
involving "Moral Turpitude"
- Have an honorable military release
(if applicable)
- Pass an In depth background check
- Pass preliminary examinations

Several requirements
must be met in order to qualify as a department recruit.
They include:
- Passing a F.D.L.E. accredited basic
law enforcement academy
- Passing the written State of Florida
Police Officer Certification examination
- Passing a written Winter Park Police
Department Civil Service examination
- Passing an in-depth background check
- Passing a credit check
- Passing a physical agility test
- Passing a polygraph examination
- Psychological examination
- Physical & drug screen
- Oral interview
Once these requirements have been completed
with success and you are approved for hire, you must complete
a fifteen week field training program and a one year probation

Applicant Disqualifies
The following is a list of some
background disqualifies that are set forth by established rules,
polices and procedures. If you meet any
of these, you will not be considered for application.
- Conviction of any felony crime
- Commission of a felony crime within five (5)
years of date of application
- Convicted of a misdemeanor involving "moral
turpitude"
- Used or possessed any controlled substance as
defined in Chapter 893 F.S.S. within one (1) year, the possession
of which would constitute a felony offense under Florida Law
- Any illegal delivery of a controlled substance,
whether or not for profit
- Two (2) or more convictions within five (5) years
for D.U.I., Driving while license suspended or revoked, Reckless
Driving, or Attempt to Elude the Police
- Five (5) convictions singly or in combination
within three (3) years of any traffic violation which demonstrates
a pattern of carelessness or driving negligence
- Has not possessed a valid operator's license
for more than one (1) year
- Dishonorable discharge from the military
